I'm finding the web to be almost over whelming...to much to read, to much to research, and way to much time sitting in front of a monitor. If I was a true college student again then I think I might look at things differently. I remember how I would research a paper...in the library, books, articles, encyclopedia....the never ending paper trail. Now it would be the click of a keyboard and I would have so much research at my finder tips and be able to discuss and share my thoughts and ideas with others who are doing the same research.
The web is a wonderful tool and I think as teachers we need to share these tools with our students in a slow but steady process starting in upper elementary school. I think when we turn them on to these tools, with the guidance they certainly need, they will take the reins and run with it way faster than I would ever do at this time in my life.

I agree with your comment about being overwhelmed with so much information. Who has time to read all of this? I can definately see how someone doing research on a specific subject can use wikipedia. I wish they had this when I was in college! I remember spending endless hours in the library.

ReplyDeleteYou make a good point about people in different generations. As someone who works in the Fitness field, I can imagine that you might cringe at the thought of so many people spending so much time in front of the computer. What ever happened to playing outside? The web is, however, an amazing tool and we do save a lot of time with so much information at our fingertips. Your son is so knowledgeable about the things he loves, he SHOULD be editing those Wiki pages! I bet he could contribute quite a bit. I'm reminded of my nephew who, as a result of the web, now knows where every Bruins player was born, when their birthday is, and all the other pertinent stats you could ever want to know. Ultimately, if we have a passion, and we thirst for details pertaining to this passion, Wikipedia can do a pretty nice job filling our insatiable appetites. Hopefully, we just take a break every once in awhile to go run around outside!
